Can Dependents Travel with a Student to Ireland?

Yes, but only for certain types of students.

Who is eligible to bring dependents?

  • Only students enrolled in postgraduate courses (Master’s or PhD) on the Irish Immigration Stamp 2 and in programs lasting at least 1 year (NFQ Level 9 or above) may be eligible to bring dependents.
  • Undergraduate students are not allowed to bring dependents.

Who qualifies as a dependent?

  • Spouse or civil partner
  • Children under 18 years old

Important Conditions:

  • The student must show sufficient financial resources to support the dependent(s).
  • The dependent must apply for a Join Family visa (Type D) separately.
  • Approval is not automatic – each case is assessed by Irish immigration authorities.

For Postgraduate (Master's) Programmes:

  • A relevant bachelor’s degree (usually 3 or 4 years).
  • Minimum of 55–70% in undergraduate studies (varies by university and course).
  • Some courses may require prior experience or a portfolio (e.g., MBA, Design, Art, etc.).

English Language Requirements

Accepted Tests:

  • IELTS: Overall 6.0–6.5 (minimum 5.5–6.0 in each band)
  • TOEFL iBT: 80–90+
  • PTE Academic: 58–63+
  • Duolingo English Test: 95–120 (some universities accept)

Note: Some universities may offer an IELTS waiver if the student studied in an English-medium school and scored well in English (e.g., 70% or more in Standard XII English for Indian students).
