The F-1 visa is the most common type of student visa issued by the United States for international students pursuing academic studies at accredited U.S. institutions, including universities, colleges, and language schools.
✅ Step 1: Receive Admission & Form I-20
Apply and receive admission to a SEVP-approved U.S. institution.
The institution will issue Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status).
Review the I-20 carefully and sign it.
✅ Step 2: Pay the SEVIS Fee
Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee online at fmjfee.com
Fee amount: $350
Save the payment confirmation receipt – this is required for your visa interview.
✅ Step 3: Complete the DS-160 Form
Fill out the DS-160 Online Visa Application Form at ceac.state.gov
Upload a passport-size photo that meets U.S. visa requirements.
Save and print the DS-160 confirmation page with the barcode.
✅ Step 4: Schedule Visa Interview
Create a profile and schedule a visa interview through the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate website in your country.
Pay the visa application fee: $185
Select a visa appointment date and VAC (Visa Application Center) appointment for biometrics (if applicable).
✅ Step 5: Attend Biometrics Appointment (if required)
Visit the VAC to provide:
Fingerprints
Photograph (if not uploaded during DS-160)
✅ Step 6: Attend the Visa Interview
Go to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate for your interview.
Bring all required documents (listed below).
Answer questions about your course, finances, ties to your home country, and future plans.
Standard processing: 5–15 working days
Apply early, ideally 2–3 months before your course start date
You can enter the U.S. 30 days before your course start date.
F-1 students may work on-campus up to 20 hours/week during study.
After completing studies, F-1 students may apply for OPT (Optional Practical Training).
